Oestrogen versus Progesterone

For women to function healthily it is essential that there is the correct balance between these two hormones. Oestrogen is dominant in the first half of the menstrual cycle, balanced by progesterone, and progesterone  is dominant for the last two weeks. The use of hormones in food production and the presence of oestrogen in recycled drinking water (from excretion of H.R.T. and the contraceptive pill) are upsetting the balance and causing ever increasing symptoms of P.M.T., depression, hot flushes, infertility, fibroids, breast cancer, reduced sex drive and osteoporosis. These conditions only occur when oestrogen is not adequately countered by progesterone.

Osteoporosis

Research by Dr J.R. Lee, the world’s leading expert on progesterone, has shown conclusively that oestrogen temporarily suspends osteoporosis, but does not arrest it. However, the administration of natural progesterone actually progressively increases the bone density and, at the same time, eliminates these other distressing symptoms.

Why a cream?

The liver blocks up to 90% of Progesterone but a cream, gently rubbed into a fleshy parts of the body, is absorbed into the fat and slowly released into the bloodstream, by-passing the liver’s blocking effect.
Why a natural product rather than a synthetic chemical
Natural balanced products contain extracts of wild yam, a source of natural progesterone, but also should have the powerful ingredient of the chaste tree vitex agnus-castus. Chaste tree is the most helpful and far reaching in its effect of all plants for pre-menopausal, menopausal and post menopausal woman. It works superbly whether hormones are deficient or in excess by acting on the pituitary gland to harmonize imbalances. It has been used for many years in Europe, Asia and the America’s and is known to enhance progesterone.
Where might it help?
Hot flushes, to regulate periods, banish cramping, ease endometriosis, shrink fibroids (when used regularly for twelve to thirty six months), keep vagina moist, strengthen bones, ease constipation, eliminate depression, and balance mood.

Phytotherapy- the healing properties of plants

Nature is an abundant source of powerful medicines. Penicillin is derived from a fungus (Penicillium notaturn), aspirin from the bark of the willow tree and Taxol (a new drug effective against certain cancers) from the yew tree. In fact, around one – quarter of all prescription drugs are derived from plants. But use of the plants as medicines is not a modern phenomenon- plant extracts have been used for centuries in natural remedies. Today through modern research and technology, responsible manufacturers harnesses the benefits of these traditional remedies in a range of specially designed, plant enriched products.
SUBVENE a natural hormone helper
Total health relies upon the proper functioning of every organ in the body; equally as important is the influence that hormone balance has on our well-being. Healthy bodies are rich in hormones that determine mood, desire and inner peace. New Ways offers SUBVENE, a hand and body cream rich in two plant extracts- wild yam and chaste tree berries, renowned for their beneficial effects on the bodies hormones, to help you maintain a natural balance.
SUBVENE – helping to put back what time takes out.
As time progresses, the ability of a woman’s body to supply essential hormones diminishes. Sometime between the ages of 25 and 40 her body’s coping mechanisms, which are regulated by hormones, also begin to weaken. And, in turn, so does her ability to handle life’s stresses and strains.
SUBVENE provides a natural solution, working inside the body and out. The active phyto-nutrients help to enhance a woman’s hormone balance while essential oils in the soothing cream formulation soften and tone the skin. The rich emollient base of sweet almond and rosehip oils combined with aloe vera and chamomile soothe dry, inflamed skin while providing a delivery system for the beneficial effects of wild yam and chaste tree berries. The immediate result- skin that feels soft, silky, stimulated and refreshed; while, in the longer term, the cumulative benefits of phyto-nutrients contribute to improved overall well being.
Maximising the benefits of SUBVENE

SUBVENE  should be applied in correlation with your menstrual cycle. Start using SUBVENE on day 7 of your cycle or at the end of your menstrual period. Apply a small amount of the cream, one-quarter to one-half a teaspoon, to the soft tissue of the body daily for 21 days, then stop for 7 days (corresponding with your next period). If you no longer have a monthly cycle you should use SUBVENE in the same way – 21 days on followed by 7 days off. Regular use will maximize the benefits of SUBVENE- you should see good results after daily use for 8 to 10 weeks.

The active ingredients in SUBVENE.... Phyto-hormones
Phyto-hormones are plant compounds with hormonal effects. Their benefits have been well documented in medical folklore. For example, plant compounds that have progesterone – like effects (phyto-progestins) are purported to activate progesterone receptors, usually with less effect than human progesterone, and provide beneficial effects such as improved fertility, healthier babies, and relief of progesterone-deficiency symptoms. The function of phyto-progestins is exceedingly complex and probably involves many other factors that, by synergy, enhance their hormonal effects. Given the health problems associated with oestrogen dominance it may appear that the use of phyto-hormones is misguided. However, the converse is in fact true. It is believed that:
  • Phyto-oestrogens may lock onto and block oestrogen receptors in the body and, in doing so, make it harder for harmful chemicals to disrupt hormone signals
  • Phyto-hormones may act like hormone regulators rather than simply mimicking the hormones.

Wild Yam

Wild yam, known botanically as Dioscorea vilosa, grows in Mexico, Canada and the United States; it is a winding vine with a starchy yellow root that is similar to a potato. Wild yams are rich in a substance called diosgenin; this potent phyto-nutrient is a precursor of the hormone progesterone. Although it can be chemically modified to produce progesterone in the laboratory (see section entitled wild yam pivotal in the development of modern hormone therapy) the body is unable to convert it. Nevertheless, wild yam does appear to convey some progesterone-like effects, probably due to other compounds in the plant which act as phyto-progestins. While disogens can help to maintain hormonal balance, it cannot replace the need for progesterone in a person deficient.
Wild yam has been used for centuries in traditional Chinese and Western remedies. With the increasing use of wild yam in commercial products, scientific studies of the plant and its medicinal values have been conducted. The results of these studies, coupled with the long history of traditional use, suggest that it benefits span many indications, such as women’s health and inflammatory conditions.
Women’s health – wild yam extract has been shown to reduce the fatigue, inflammation, pain and stress related to menstruation. It is also a valuable anti-spasmodic, making it helpful in relieving menstrual cramps.  In pregnant women, wild yam has been used to relieve nausea associated with morning sickness and to help prevent miscarriage. It has been used to ease after pains of childbirth .
Inflammatory conditions – historically, wild yam was used to help reduce inflammation. Scientific studies now show that diosgenin has an anti-inflammatory effect in animals. In humans, it has proved very helpful in calming the inflamed joints that accompany rheumatism. It also relieves abdominal pain in soothing the inflamed tissues of the stomach and intestines.
Today, more than 30 million wild yam plants are harvested annually in Mexico alone, leading Rosemary Gladstar to comment that “wild yam is the most widely used herb in the world today” in her book entitled Herbal Healing for Women.

Wild yam pivotal in the development of modern hormone therapy!

Progesterone is a hormone that is produced in the body by the corpus luteum after ovulation and, in smaller quantities, by the adrenal cortex and the testes (in men). It has many roles in human physiology and several body tissues, including the uterus, cervix, and vagina, the endocrine system, water balance, bone cells, energy production and thermogenesis immune system, survival and development of the embryo, and growth and development of the foetus. In medicine, synthetic progesterone is used to correct abnormalities of the menstrual cycle, as a contraceptive, and to control habitual abortion.
Until the 1930’s progesterone for medical use was extracted from the placental tissue or from ovaries of pregnant sows – a costly and inefficient process. However, in 1932 this all changed when a biochemist named Russell E Marker set out to find a more economical source of progesterone, focusing his research on plants known to exhibit hormonal effects. He first showed saponins, or plant fats, extracted from sarsparilla, could be chemically modified to produce progesterone. Then, in 1938, he found that the Mexican wild yam (dioscorea vilosa) was an even better source of saponins, and in particular, a compound called disogenin, which could be more economically converted into progesterone.
In 1939 Marker and two colleagues founded the Syntex Corporation- specialising in the production of progesterone and other plant derived, patentable compounds serving as oestrogens, corticosteroids, and testosterone-like drugs. Thus, modern hormone pharmaceuticals and the clinical use of synthetic hormones had begun.
Chaste tree berries
The chaste tree, or Vitex agnus-castus, is a small, fruit bearing tree that grows in moist riverbanks in the Mediterranean region. The part of the plant most often used is the berries which contain flavanoids, agnuside and aucubin. The chaste tree berry has been recognized as a herb for women’s problems since ancient times.  Its use was advocated by Hippocrates ( 460- 377 BC) –   ‘If blood flows from the womb let the woman drink dark wine in which the leaves of the Vitex have been steeped’, and later by Pliny (23-79AD) ‘The (chaste) trees furnish medicines that promote urine and menstruation’. Also referred to as ‘Monk’s Pepper’ , it was used during the Middle Ages by men who wished to maintain there vows of celibacy.
Modern scientific interest in the value of chaste tree berries has encouraged investigation of its use in treating PMS, menopausal symptoms and irregular peri-menopausal bleeding. Two clinical studies involving over 3000 women conducted in Germany, where physicians prescribe chaste tree berry formulations for menstrual problems, report 90% relief from the symptoms of PMS after one month. Similar findings have been reported in a further study that followed patients for up to 6 years. More recently a randomized study involving 127 women compared the efficacy of chaste tree berry with that of vitamin B6 in the relief of PMS symptoms, both groups showed significant improvement after three months.  Other studies indicate that phyto-nutrients in chaste tree berries act on the pituary gland where they mimic the action of corpus luteum. German investigators conducted a study to determine whether a chaste tree berry formulation could normalize progesterone synthesis in women with luteal phase deficits. After 3 months of therapy prolactin release was reduced, shortened luteal phases were normalized, and deficits in the luteal progesterone synthesis were eliminated in those patients given chaste tree preparation. The authors concluded that this preparation is an efficient medication in the treatment of luteal phase defects due to latent hyperprolactinaemia.
